Is it possible to hook up speakers to my CD player?
Today i bought 2 Sony speakers and a Sony CD player. I bought them separate. I don't know if I can hook the speakers up to the CD player because the CD player only has a Digital Out Optical and a Analog Out in the back. The Analog Out has 2 round holes for a red and white cord to be inserted and the Digital Out Optical has 1 square slot. I don't have any speaker wires. I have a split end red and white cords that came with the CD player but they woun't plug into the speakers. The speakers both have a red and black slot in the back of them with a "+" and a "-" for speaker wire to be inserted. I don't know if I bought the wrong CD player or if it might be possible to connect the speakers to it. The CD player that I purchased is

The answer is yes you can hook them up. By your question, I am assuming that you are a person who simply wants to listen to your CDs and just wants to get the thing working. So ill explain why it is not working, and what you should do to solve it. Here is why it is not yet working:
CDs are a way for people to write down what music is being played. The CD player reads the back of the CD like a book and creates the sound that the CD has written on it. This sound is then put out of the CD player in either an analog signal, or a digital signal. The analog signal is the red and the white plugs you see, and the digital signal is the square black one.
The speakers are what play the sound. It uses the same analog signals that the CD player puts out, but speakers take a much more powerful version of it. It would be like trying to use your microwave plugged into a AA battery.
So to solve your problem, you need what is called a stereo receiver. You don’t have to spend hundreds of dollars on one; you only need a basic one (50 US dollars). What a stereo receiver does is it takes the output of the CD player, and it makes it more powerful so that you can run your speakers.
Once you get a stereo receiver, all you need to do is take the red and white cables that came with your CD player and plug them into both the CD player and the stereo receiver. The back of the receiver has round holes that are identical to the ones on the back of the CD player. It will say “CD” next to them. After you have plugged in the CD player, you should hook the speakers into the stereo receiver. You will need to buy basic speaker cables. The receiver will have ports that are identical to the ones on the back of your speakers. Push the button on the port and insert your wire inside. Make sure to match colors.
This setup will give you the ability to listen to your music. If you need help selecting a receiver, ask one of the sales guys at the store. Remember, almost any receiver will do. If he/she asks what you need from a technical standpoint, just say “I need a stereo receiver to power my two speakers. I only need it to have stereo analog inputs.”
