Touch Ipod 3Rd Generation : Oh! Love My
Mine is the latest Sept. 2009 release (with the internet access) but it's not really called a Touch iPod 3rd Generation like the iPhone is. You can surf in WiFi enabled areas (both free and secured, if you have the access code). I played movies and songs which can use the internal speaker. Just use the buds or get a high quality set audio set. The internal speaker's great though, when you want to play something for someone else. Pricey but I like the build quality and reputation. I've had Touch iPod 3rd Generation 30gb white (black/white LCD), the 5th gen 60gb Classic (given to my fiancee), and the latest 2009 160gb classic for music. This iPod touch is for internet access, saving notes and watching movies only.
I got it mainly to use as a movie device. But I also wanted something to connect to the internet to, after watching people look at pictures from a game we covered at the airport in San Diego... they could zoom on the pictures while we had to crack open our laptops. Now I have my Yahoo mail configured to one-click access. I also need a device to make notes, save addresses and contact info, and save calender dates. My Touch iPod 3rd Generation even shows weather, which I love to see. Trying to save my info on my cell phone, the phone dies every couple years but Verizon has never been able to upload the date into my replacement.
As for iPod touch being scratch-prone, I went right to a local store to get a protective skin, and will purchase a Zagg skin or Best Skins Ever to cover the back. There are rubberized type covers you can buy here or at convenience stores, and I'm a little anal about wanting mine protected. I get the thin skin you apply (it sticks firm but removes if you want) and then put a rubberized type of cover as well. Note though, 2009 owners: there have been some issues about some applied skins on the latest touch screen that may erode the film that Apple applies.
It's called an oleophobic coating, a polymer film that's applied to glass. What I have heard is you might want to look for a static cling-on screen, not the type that's tough as nails. What I keep seeing though is that the glass screen by Apple barely gets scratched when unprotected.
What would I like on the Touch iPod 3rd Generation? Of course, video/still capture. They'll do it when they feel they can make the most money, but the iPhone is doing well in sales for them to go there now, I'm sure. I wish I didn't have to go to Apple Store to get apps. I wish it could become an external drive like my older iPods (there's an app that will make it so, I'll download that).
Bid downside on the Amazon front though: they boxed it without using bubble wrap, and I wrote them a response about it; whoever boxes like that is a doofus.
